Skin Care and Sun Protection for Winter Sports

Outdoor winter activities such as skiing, hiking, or ice skating can be fun. But donít forget the skin care: The sun can still harm your skin.

If you live or are vacationing in high altitudes, the sunís damaging rays increase by four percent for every 1,000 feet of elevation. In snow, itís even worse. More than half of the damaging rays is reflected back onto your skin. And, donít let the cold fool you. The temperature of the air has no effect on the sunís harmful ultraviolet rays.
In winter, sunscreens may be less effective too. Cold winds and dry air cause them to evaporate quickly. So use a sunscreen with a good moisturizing base that will resist the evaporating effect. Also, be sure the sunscreen protects you from the sunís damaging UVA and UVB rays.
