Skin Care Treatment Tips for Men: The Way You Shave Could Cause Skin Problems

07/31/2007

Guys are lucky. While women spend their time and money at salons to restore their youthful hair color, a little gray on a man is distinguished. Women fill their bathroom shelves and visit cosmetic surgeons to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles, while men develop character and maturity. Life just isn’t fair sometimes. But one thing that is not attractive on men is dry skin, eczema and blemishes. And since men have the disadvantages of rougher skin and stubble, it can be difficult for them. A good skin care treatment will help immensely, but more problems are caused by shaving than just about anything else. Here are some shaving tips that will prevent skin damage.

  1. Start by lubricating the skin, as usual, but use a good shielding lotion instead of the usual shaving products. Most soaps and shaving lotions and other skin care treatment products contain chemicals that cause dry skin and other problems.
  2. Use a single blade razor. Double or triple-blade razors stretch the skin and cause the hair to pop out of the follicles. You then cut the hair below the follicle and, when it pops back into place, the sharp tip of the hair curls into the skin and causes ingrown hairs and razor bumps.
  3. Don’t stretch the skin. I’ve seen several men do this in an effort to get a closer shave. But stretching the skin pulls the hair out of the follicle, just like double or triple blades, and you get the same problem.
  4. If you’re using disposable razors, don’t use them more than once. Dull blades pull the hair and irritate the skin.
  5. Shave in the same direction as the hair is growing. If it grows up, shave up. Shaving in a different direction pulls the hair.
  6. Don’t shave skin that already has razor bumps or is damaged. Try to let things heal first. A good skin care treatment such as a shielding lotion will help it heal quickly.

Men might not admit it, but they’re embarrassed about skin problems just like women. Proper natural skin care treatment when shaving will prevent many of the problems, and will do a lot to enhance that distinguished, mature look many women can’t help but admire.
