Natural Skin Care for Mom Leads to Healthier Babies

05/21/2008

It’s long been known that some allergies are inherited: In fact, if a woman is exposed to allergens while pregnant it can damage her unborn child’s immune system and, consequently, the child may also have allergies. Unfortunately, many people take medications when their allergy symptoms kick in - which is not only bad for both mother and baby, it can depress the immune system even further. While some allergens cause damage when inhaled, others enter the body through the skin. A new breakthrough in skin care technology may be the answer mothers with allergies are looking for to protect themselves and their children.

How do allergens enter the body through the skin? The outer layer of the skin consists of dead skin cells, fats and oils. This combination is designed to prevent the absorption of harmful substances such as allergens, household and environmental chemicals, germs, bacteria, viruses, and so on.

However, when you have a skin problem - acne, dry skin, psoriasis, dermatitis or rashes – the protective surface layer is compromised. Dry skin, for example, is full of little, sometimes invisible, cracks. The offending substances find their way through those cracks and into the body. Some substances may cause an immediate reaction, while others may not be a problem until long-term exposure heightens sensitivity or results in an accumulation too large for the immune system to handle.

This affects the mother and, in turn, the child she is carrying. The baby, with a low body weight and organs, systems and functions not yet fully developed, is at high risk.

Although defense against inhaled substances requires building up the immune system, for full protection you also need topical skin care treatment to prevent and heal damaged skin. Unfortunately, most of the skin care products available also contain harmful chemicals and do little to heal the skin: They coat the skin with a substance that feels smooth – mineral oil or a similar petroleum product – but underneath that slick surface the skin is getting worse. In the meantime, you’re also absorbing the chemicals in the skin care product. Not a good solution.

However, there is another alternative – shielding lotion. A good shielding lotion bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a new protective layer than keeps out chemicals and locks in moisture, allowing the skin to heal itself. It also enables the skin to breathe – which is a real problem with other skin care products that block the pores and make it impossible for toxins to be eliminated through the skin, another of the skin’s major functions.

Having a healthy baby means keeping mom healthy, too. Exposure to allergens, toxins, chemicals and pollutants is causing a number of health problems – don’t let them be passed on to your baby. Get rid of all the household and environmental chemicals you can and replace them with natural products, including skin care treatment, build your immune system, and use a shielding lotion. It will keep you and your baby healthy, and you’ll have the added bonus of healthy, beautiful skin.
